A Guide to Video Download Templates

Video Download Templates are a core feature in Kontainer for teams working with video files. Just like image Download Templates help you avoid a mess of duplicates, Video Download Templates let you predefine conversion settings — so your users can always fetch a video in exactly the right format, resolution, and quality from one original source.

Whether you need a compressed version for social media, a high-quality master for broadcast, or a muted cut for an online marketplace, you set it up once and your users get it right every time.

REMEMBER TO GIVE ACCESS: With templates, as with everything else in Kontainer, users need access, which can be set at the individual user or user group level.

One video, endless possibilities

Video Download Templates are conversion presets. No matter the specs of the original video stored in Kontainer, users can download it in the format, resolution, bitrate, and framerate the job requires. You can create as many templates as you need.

Typical uses

  • Social media (compressed, vertical, muted)
  • Broadcast and press (high quality, original framerate)
  • Web and e-commerce (limited file size, specific format)
  • Internal review copies
  • Distribution partners with fixed format requirements
  • Channel-specific versioning (YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, etc.)

Set up a Video Download Template

NOTE: Remember to press Save when creating and editing template settings.

Step 1: Create new

Find Resources in the left menu. Select Video Download Templates in the submenu that appears.

Click Create New in the top-right corner.

Step 2: Conversion settings

Once you have created a new template and given it a name, you can configure the conversion settings below.

Format

Select the output container format for the video file.

Option Notes
Original Keeps the source file's format
MOV Apple QuickTime format, common in production workflows
MP4 Widely supported format, ideal for web and social media
MKV Open container format, good for high-quality archiving
WEBM Web-optimised format, often used for browser playback
WMV Windows Media Video format

Resolution

Set the output resolution. Choosing a lower resolution than the original reduces file size significantly.

Option Description
Original Keeps the source resolution
480p (SD) Standard definition
720p (HD) High definition
1080p (Full HD) Full HD, most common for web and social
1440p (Quad HD) High-quality output
720p (HD) – Vertical Rotated for portrait/mobile formats
1080p (Full HD) – Vertical Portrait full HD
1440p (Quad HD) – Vertical Portrait Quad HD
1350p (Instagram feed, 4:5) Optimised for Instagram feed format
Custom Enter a specific width and height

Resize behavior

Determines how the video is resized when the output resolution has a different aspect ratio than the source.

Option Description
Scale Scales the video to fit within the target resolution while preserving the aspect ratio
Crop Crops the video to fill the target resolution exactly

Framerate (fps)

Set the output frames per second. Reducing the framerate can significantly lower file size.

Option Description
Original Keeps the source framerate
24 Standard cinematic framerate
30 Common for web and broadcast
60 High framerate, smooth motion
Custom Enter a specific framerate

Video bitrate

Controls the quality and file size of the video stream. Higher bitrate means better quality and larger files.

Option Description
Original Keeps the source video bitrate
Low Reduced quality, smaller files
Medium Balanced quality and file size
High Near-original quality
Custom Enter a specific bitrate value

Audio bitrate

Controls the quality of the audio stream in the output file.

Option Description
Original Keeps the source audio bitrate
Low Reduced audio quality
Medium Balanced audio quality
High Near-original audio quality
Custom Enter a specific audio bitrate value

Remove audio

Tick this box to strip the audio track from the output video entirely. Useful for social media templates where muted autoplay is standard, or for marketplace channels that do not accept video with audio.

Limit file size

Tick this box to set a maximum file size for the output. Enter the limit in MB in the field that appears.

Output will not exceed this size.

The system will adjust quality as needed to keep the output within your specified limit. This is useful when a platform or partner has a strict upload size requirement.

Include data in Excel

Tick this box if you want to download or send an Excel sheet containing the file metadata alongside the video files.

Enable naming template

(Premium feature)

Enable this to apply a custom file naming convention to all videos downloaded using this template. This is useful for partners who require a specific naming format, or for internal tracking and SEO purposes.

See the Download Templates guide for full details on how to configure naming templates.

PLEASE REMEMBER: Do not use a full stop "." in a naming template — it will confuse the system, as a full stop is the prefix for the file extension (e.g. "summer_campaign.mp4").

Watermark

(Premium feature)

Enable this to overlay a watermark on the output video. Watermark settings — including image, size, position, and opacity — are configured within the template.

See the Enabling and Configuring Watermarks in Download Templates article for the full range of settings.

Step 3: Set Permissions

Once you have created your video download templates, give users access via the Access tab in the left menu. Permissions can be set on a single user or a user group.

The path is Access → Users / Groups → Download options → Video Download templates.

Once this is done, users will be able to select your pre-defined video download templates, when clicking the download button on a video file.

These video conversion templates are naturally also available via API.
