Premium feature. Filename templates are available on Premium plans and up. Only admin users can set them up.
A filename template renames files as they are downloaded through a download template. Instead of the file's original name, every file gets a name built from your own text and the data stored on the file, such as its item number or colour code. Kontainer fills in the values for each file automatically.
On top of that, you can add modifiers to any part of the name, for example to change upper and lower case, shorten a value, add leading zeroes or use another value when a field is empty.
Example: Zalando file names
Zalando, like many marketplaces, expects product images to follow a fixed naming convention. A download template for Zalando could use this filename template:
Zalando_[Item no]_[Colour code]_[Placement]
A packshot with the item number 482913, the colour code BLK and the placement 10 is then downloaded as:
Zalando_482913_BLK_10.jpg
The template is made of seven parts: the text "Zalando_", the Item no field, the text "_", the Colour code field, the text "_", the Placement field and, automatically, the file extension of the format chosen in the download template.
Set up a filename template
- Click Resources in the left menu, then Asset templates under Downloads.
- Open the download template you want to edit, or click Create New.
- Scroll down and tick Enable naming template. The Filename template section opens.
- Click a field in the list below to add it to the file name. Each field appears as a block, in the order you add them.
- Click + to add your own text, such as "Zalando_" or an underscore between two fields.
- Click the pencil icon on a block to add a modifier to it, or the bin icon to remove the block.
- Click Save.

The top of the section always shows the complete template, so you can check it before saving. Click the arrow next to + to open a short overview of all modifiers.
Fields you can use
General values are available in every Kontainer:
| Field | What it adds to the file name |
|---|---|
| File name | The name the file has in Kontainer |
| File ID | The file's unique ID in Kontainer |
| File upload date | The date the file was uploaded |
Below the general values you will find your own data fields, such as Item no, Collection or Material. These are the fields set up in your Kontainer, so the list differs from account to account.
Modifiers
A modifier changes the value of one block before it becomes part of the file name. To add one, click the pencil icon on the block, open the Modifiers list and choose the modifier you need. Each modifier has a short name, shown in brackets in the overview.
Clean up text
| Modifier | What it does | Typical use in file names |
|---|---|---|
| Case (case) | Changes the text to upper case, lower case, a capital first letter, or a capital first letter in every word. | Make colour codes consistent, so "blk" becomes "BLK". |
| Trim (trim) | Removes spaces, or characters you choose, from both ends of the value. | Remove stray spaces or a leading dash from imported data. |
| Collapse spaces (squish) | Turns several spaces in a row into a single space. | Tidy up values that were typed or imported with double spaces. |
| Handle (slug) | Turns the value into lower case and replaces everything that is not a letter. Made for web addresses. | SEO-friendly file names for websites and webshops. |
| Replace (replace) | Swaps one piece of text for another, either as plain text or with a regular expression. | Replace spaces with underscores, or a long colour name with a code. |
| HTML (html) | Removes HTML tags from the value, or turns line breaks into tags. | Use a formatted text field, such as a description, without tags ending up in the name. |
Shorten or pick out part of a value
| Modifier | What it does | Typical use in file names |
|---|---|---|
| Truncate (truncate) | Cuts the value to a maximum length. | Keep file names within the length a partner accepts. |
| Cut (cut) | Keeps only the text on one side of a separator. | Use only the "482913" part of an item number stored as "482913-BLK". |
| Regex extract (regex_extract) | Keeps the first match of a regular expression. | Pick out a number or code from a longer text. |
Format numbers and lengths
| Modifier | What it does | Typical use in file names |
|---|---|---|
| Pad (pad) | Lengthens the value to a fixed size, for example with leading zeroes. | Turn placement "1" into "01" so files sort correctly. |
| Format number (format_number) | Sets the number of decimals and the separators of a number. Values that are not numbers are left as they are. | Show sizes or weights the same way in every file name. |
| Random suffix (unique) | Adds a random ending so two values cannot end up the same. | Avoid two files getting the same name in one download. |
Fields with several values or lines
These modifiers work on fields that hold more than one value, such as a list of colours or a text with several lines. Some of them also change how many files a download produces: when a file name ends up with several values, you get a separate file for each value.
| Modifier | What it does | Effect on the downloaded files |
|---|---|---|
| Every line (all) | Treats each line of the text as its own value. | One file per line. A field with three lines gives three files, each named with its own line. |
| Split (split) | Splits one value into several, on a separator you choose. | One file per value. A colour field with "BLK,WHT", split on the comma, gives two files: one named with BLK and one with WHT. |
| Join (join) | Combines several values into one. | One file, with all the values in its name. Use Join when you want a single file from a field with several values. |
| One line (nth) | Uses a single line, chosen by its number. | One file, named with the chosen line. |
| Sort (sort) | Sorts several values alphabetically, in either direction. | Decides the order of the values, and so the order of the files. |
| Counter (counter) | Numbers each value. | Each of the files gets its own number in the name. |
One modifier from another group also matters for the files themselves: Random suffix (unique) makes sure no two files in a download get the same name, so none of them overwrite each other.
Logic
| Modifier | What it does | Typical use in file names |
|---|---|---|
| Condition (if) | Uses one value if a condition is true and another if it is not. | Add "_PACK" only to files whose media type is packshot. |
| Hide (hide) | Leaves the block out of the file name, either always or when a condition is met. | Leave out the colour code when it is not relevant. |
| Fallback (default_to) | Uses another value when the field is empty. | Use "10" as placement when no placement is filled in. |
Conditions and operators
When you choose Condition, you set up the condition and what should happen:
- Operator: how the block's value is compared, see the table below.
- Value: what the block's value is compared with.
- + next to Value: adds another condition.
- When true: the value to use when the condition is met.
- When false: the value to use when it is not.
| Operator | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| = | Equal to | Placement = 10 |
| != | Not equal to | Colour code != BLK |
| < | Less than | Placement < 20 |
| <= | Less than or equal to | Placement <= 20 |
| > | Greater than | Placement > 10 |
| >= | Greater than or equal to | Placement >= 10 |
Example with modifiers
Going back to the Zalando template, two modifiers make the file names more reliable:
- Case on the Colour code block, set to upper case, so "blk" and "Blk" both become "BLK".
- Fallback on the Placement block, set to "10", so files without a placement still get a complete name.
A file with item number 482913, colour code "blk" and no placement is then downloaded as Zalando_482913_BLK_10.jpg.
Good to know
- Do not use a full stop (.) in a filename template. A full stop separates the file name from the file type, as in "summer_shirt.jpeg", so a full stop inside the name can cause problems.
- Keep your file data filled in. The file name is built from the data on each file. Use Fallback for fields that are sometimes empty.
- Remember to give access. Users only see download templates they have access to. Set this under Access, Users/Groups, Download templates.
