# Folders and page designs in multiple languages

If your Kontainer is used in more than one language, your folders can speak all of them. You can give the page design inside a folder a version for each language, with different text, images and videos. Folder names can be translated too. Each user automatically sees the version that matches the system language they have chosen.

This is useful when, for example, a brand guide, product launch or press kit is shared with colleagues, partners or customers in several countries.

## Before you start

- The languages you can use are the system languages that are active in your Kontainer. Read more about setting them up in [Language Settings](https://helpdesk.kontainer.com/article/language-settings/).
- To edit a folder's page design, you need delete rights to that folder.
- If you are new to the Page editor, start with [Custom folder design & landing pages (Page Editor)](https://helpdesk.kontainer.com/article/custom-landing-pages/).

## Translate a folder's page design

### 1. Open the Page editor

Go to the folder you want to work on. Click More at the top right of the folder view, and then click Page Editor.

### 2. Choose the language to work in

When the Page editor is open, a language picker appears at the top right of the page. It lists every language that is active in your Kontainer.

A small dot next to a language means that the page still has content that is not translated into that language. This gives you a quick overview of which languages need work.

![The Page editor in a Kontainer folder with the language picker open. English is selected, and a small dot next to German, French, Portuguese, Swedish, Spanish, Dutch and Danish shows that these languages still need translation.](https://helpdesk.kontainer.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/multilingual-language-picker.webp?v=1791523338)

Pick the language you want to work on. The whole page switches to that language, so you can see how it looks and go through it element by element.

### 3. Edit the content for each language

Click the pencil icon on an element to edit it. Two things in the edit window help you keep track:

- At the top right, Editing: shows which language you are editing, for example Editing: German. To edit another language, close the window, choose the language in the language picker and open the element again.
- Fields that can have a different version per language are marked with a line to the left of their name. Hover over the line to see the label Translatable. Fields without the line are shared, so a change there applies to all languages.

When you open an element in a language that has not been translated yet, the translatable fields already contain the existing content, for example the English text. Simply replace it with the translation.

Here are two examples.

#### Example: a text element

![The Edit text section window in the Page editor with Editing: German shown at the top right. The Content field is marked with a line and a Translatable label, while Padding, Background and Position have no mark.](https://helpdesk.kontainer.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/multilingual-edit-text-section.webp?v=1791523472)

In a text element, the Content field is translatable. This is where you write the text in the language you are editing, such as the German heading and body text.

Padding, Background and Position are shared. If you change the background colour while editing German, it changes in English and every other language too.

#### Example: an image element

![The Edit Image section window in the Page editor with Editing: English shown at the top right. The uploaded image, the internal image picker, the Alternative text field and the Link field are marked with a line as translatable, while Link type, Open in new tab and Don't use auto-scale have no mark.](https://helpdesk.kontainer.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/multilingual-edit-image-section-link.webp?v=1791524518)

In an image element, the image itself is translatable, whether you upload it or choose it from your Kontainer. So you can show, for example, a campaign visual with German text to German users and the English version to English users. The Alternative text is translatable too.

The Link is also translatable. This means an image can point to a different web address per language, for example to the German or the English version of your website.

The Link type, Open in new tab and Don't use auto-scale settings are shared across all languages.

Other element types, such as GIF animations and videos, work the same way: look for the line next to a field to see whether it can be versioned per language.

When you have made your changes, click Save. Then pick the next language with a dot in the language picker and repeat.

### What is the same in every language

The layout of the page is shared across all languages. Sections, the order of elements, and shared settings such as padding, background and position are the same for everyone. Only the translatable content changes between languages.

This means you build the page once, and then fill in the content for each language.

## Folder names in multiple languages

Folder names can also be translated. Go to the folder, click More at the top right of the folder view, and then click Configure Folder. Under Folder name translations, you will find a name field for each language that is active in your Kontainer.

![The Configure folder window with the folder name Collections and an expanded Folder name translations section showing 1 of 8 set. The German field contains Kollektionen, while the other languages show the normal name Collections as a placeholder.](https://helpdesk.kontainer.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/multilingual-folder-name-translations.webp?v=1791524828)

Fill in the name for each language you want to translate, and leave the rest empty. An empty field shows the folder's normal name in grey, which is the name users of that language will see. The counter at the top, for example 1 of 8 set, shows how many languages have their own name.

Click Save when you are done.

Just like the page design, the folder name is shown in each user's chosen system language. This applies to the folder menu, breadcrumbs and folder views, and translated names can also be found through search.

## What users see

Users do not need to pick a language in the folder. Kontainer shows the page in the system language each user has chosen in their profile.

If an element has not been translated into a user's language yet, Kontainer shows it in the following order of preference:

1. The user's own system language.
2. Your Kontainer's default language.
3. The language the element was first created in.

So nobody sees an empty page. Users see the default language until a translation is ready.

> Tip: Build and finish the page in your Kontainer's default language first. Then work through the languages marked with a dot in the language picker and translate the elements one by one.

## How the language is chosen

Both the page design and the folder names follow the system language each user has selected. Users can change their own language under their profile, and admins can change it for other users under Access > Users. Read how in [Language Settings](https://helpdesk.kontainer.com/article/language-settings/).
